I was invisible.

Sitting there on top of the water tower, observing the activities below.

She walked slowly through the rows of corn and beans. Stepping carefully, pulling a weed here and there, bending down, inspecting. She seemed older than she probably was. But what had she seen in her few years on earth? She's not a model. She's a living, breathing, loving, sinning, dying human being. Just going about her own business.

She walks to the edge of the field. Just a nondescript field somewhere in Africa. She calls something to the little boy across the way and pauses to watch the men building a house nearby. She leans against a concrete post; watching, thinking, breathing.

I trip the shutter. Quietly. Humbly. She doesn't know I'm watching, and it feels as if I'm intruding... stealing a piece of her soul. Oh the power of human expression.

What kind of life does she lead... and do we care?

And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges,
and constrain them to come in, that my house may be filled.
Luke 14:23

  1. Jesus cares, we should care. And now I care.

We all are "living, breathing, loving, sinning, dying human beings," if that doesn't give you pause I don't know what will.

    Wonderful piece.
